The challenge

A volatile commodities market and the COVID-19 pandemic were key challenges to deliver a facility that leads the way in patient experience with cutting-edge technology.  ÒùЦ½ºþ constructed a new 272,000 SF, five-story multispecialty outpatient surgery center and 1,000-space parking garage on the campus of Mercy Hospital St. Louis. The center features bariatrics, neurosurgery, orthopedics/sports medicine, reconstructive surgery, urology, weight and wellness programming, imaging, and a 10 OR surgery center.  The high-tech expansive facility uses dynamic scheduling, tracking and clinician alert system (a leading consumer modeling program) to create a single point of care and enhance patient experience.

Challenge met

With a patient-focused design, proactive risk management, technological advancements, and a Lean construction approach, ÒùЦ½ºþ successfully built the Center for Performance Medicine & Specialty Care and parking garage.

Sitework on the project had just begun when the COVID pandemic took hold.  ÒùЦ½ºþ quickly and proactively managed cost escalation risks and improved project efficiency by purchasing the raw steel prior to design completion.  By doing so, it minimized the impact of volatile commodities markets and ensured timely steel delivery to the site.  It also saved the project $670,000 in cost escalation.

Advanced technology tools were also employed on the construction site to enhance team efficiency and collaboration. Through regular drone flights, monthly video updates, and an online project portal and dashboard, the team maintained open communication and provided stakeholders with real-time project updates. Utilizing software such as StructionSite, Drone Deploy and Procore, the project was delivered with transparency which made an impactful difference to Mercy and its constituents.
